Direct answer

What is AI agent observability?

AI agent observability is the ability to reconstruct and analyze what happened during an agent run across model calls, retrieval, tools, handoffs, state changes, latency, cost, errors, and final outcomes. It depends on structured traces and metadata, not only application logs. Evaluation adds quality judgments to that observed behavior.

Observable run

A useful trace connects the request to the final outcome without losing causal order.

User intent, version, environment, session, and allowed context.

01

What should an agent trace capture?

Capture the causal path through the system with enough context to explain each consequential step.

A trace commonly includes model inputs and outputs, retrieval results, tool names and arguments, handoffs, guardrails, timing, token or cost data, errors, and version metadata. Sensitive inputs may need redaction or exclusion.

Answer checklist
  • 01Trace and span identifiers
  • 02Agent, model, prompt, and release version
  • 03Tool and retrieval events
  • 04Latency, cost, and errors
  • 05Final output and side effects
02

How is observability different from evaluation?

Observability records behavior; evaluation scores behavior against a criterion.

A trace can show that the agent called a refund tool. An evaluation can judge whether that tool was appropriate, whether its arguments matched policy, and whether the final response was correct. Most quality programs need both.

03

Is room history the same as technical observability?

No. Human-readable workflow evidence and technical traces answer different questions.

A workflow room can show the brief, posted findings, reviewer feedback, tasks, and accepted decision. Engineers still need application traces for intermediate model calls, tool errors, latency, token cost, and runtime state.

Answer checklist
  • 01Technical trace: how the run executed
  • 02Evaluation: whether behavior met a criterion
  • 03Workflow record: what the team reviewed and accepted
